Part IV - I Don't Wear Brooches! A Series on Ways to Repurpose Vintage Brooches

So far in this series we've talked about necklaces and headbands, the next simple, fun and elegant way you can use a vintage brooch is in a hair comb. I love this idea for special occasions where an updo is called for!

Just to reiterate - I like to keep the backs on my brooches so that I can choose to use them again in different ways, so this version of the hair comb is all about keeping the brooch intact.

Brooch as Hair Comb

Step One - Select a brooch that's large enough to cover the entire top of your hair comb. If you can find a metal hair comb it'll hold up to the weight of a brooch better, but plastic will do too. (I get vintage hair combs at estate sales for mine, but you can get plastic ones pretty cheap at the dollar store and pharmacies as well.)

Step Two - Obtain photo hanging wire, jewelry wire or the like and a pair of wire clippers.

Step Three - Position the brooch so that the pin portion rests right on top of the top most edge of the hair comb. Using the wire weave between the teeth of the comb and the pin on the brooch to attach the brooch to the comb. You may need to do this several times until the brooch becomes steady on the comb.

Step Four - Pop it into your updo for a classy, beautiful look that adds sparkle!

So the next time you see a vintage brooch, don't hesitate - you can really wear it!

Stay tuned for the next idea!
